Several sailors on a boat appear to be in a hurry to lower the mast of the ship in order to cross under a bridge. There is an excited crowd of onlookers that are surveying this spectacle. Some of them appear quite worried about the possible collision between the mast and the bridge. The ship is likely carrying some goods to be sold in the marketplace, which is evidenced by the unloading of similar goods from similar ships elsewhere in the scroll. From this scroll, it appears that water transport was an important means of circulating merchandise in China during this time. Additionally, the large number of people manning the ship suggests that there was a significant economic component to the transport of goods (e.g. hiring sailors, navigators, etc). Due to the portrayed inexperience of the sailors in navigating the obstacle presented by the bridge, it may be suggested that water transport of large quantities of market goods was a relatively technology during this time (or perhaps had only been commercialized recently). However, since the Qingming scroll is a depiction of the Qingming festivities, the rushed and hurried sailors could also be an artistic choice in showing the energy and excitement of the festival rather than the depiction of a common obstacle in navigating ships. From the drawing, the composition of the ship is clearly wood, which suggests that the cost of production for wooden structures may have been more affordable or manageable than that of structures from other materials such as bronze or iron. This is further evidenced by the wooden bridge and wooden buildings that are prevalent in the scroll. As a result, one can infer that the harvesting and crafting of wood were important industries during this time and place (Northern Song). In conclusion, the depiction of the sailors trying to cross the bridge provides a lively portrayal of the excitement surrounding the festival and also highlights some possible facets of Chinese economy during the Northern Song. |
