Description: |
A Daoist room for family worship. The statue is the Pearly Emperor on High, the chief god of the Daoist pantheon. He is the supreme Lord of the physical world, and the saviour of men. He is considered as a personal god, who had his Court, palace, ministers, received delegations from other gods his subordinates, and intimated to them his orders. His name appeared as Pearly Emperor in the writings of the Daoists earlier than the Tang Dynasty (618-907). But it was in the Tang that he was given the title 'the Pearly Emperor on Hign'. In the Song Dynasty (960-1127), two emperors Zhenzong(998-1022) and Huizong (1101-1126) patronized the god. From that time he became the most popular god of the people. On the back is the portrait of the Old Master. He was a mysterious historical figure in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC). It is believed that he wrote the book 'the Classic of the Way and Virtues' which later became the bible of the Daoism. He is worshipped by the Daoists as the first of their Trinity. In the Tang Dynasty, he was canonized as 'The Great Supreme Emperor of the Dark First Cause'. |
