If I'm reading this sign correctly, it says "Daojia shangse XXX" - perfect, best quality XXX". I think this is a nice example of the extent to which the Song dynasty became rapidly commercialized that store names such as this began to pop up. This points not just to the Attractions of the Capital reading, but also to the fact that there was market competition for consumers' attentions (although this particular restaurant doesn't seem to have many customers) which we normally feel is a modern concept. This certainly points to a robust market economy along with the other stores around here; this points to the higher-order prosperity that was acheived beyond rice paddies and individual farms to make a sustainable merchantile class and supply chain operations possible |
