Horse |

Description: |
Horseback riding was an apparently popular means of land transportation, as depicted in the painting. However, within the context of the painting, horseback riding seems to be restricted to the elite of society, such as officials or the literati. Note, also, while there are many wheel carts drawn by donkeys, there seems to be no horse-drawn carriages at all in the painting.

Here, in particular, we see that the horseback rider is running into a sedan chair coming in the opposite direction. The servants of both sides are trying to negotiate a way for their respective masters. |
